Why Strength Training for Older adults is Essential

The human body changes as we age, of course, and often in ways we don’t like. Even healthy, normal aging includes:

  • A slower metabolism.
  • Decreased muscle mass and strength.
  • Increased body fat.
  • Reduced bone density.
  • Increased bone porosity.
  • Stiffer joints.
  • Slower reflexes and reaction times.
  • Decreased aerobic capacity.

These are just some of the normal changes we experience with aging, but they don’t have to be extreme. One of the most important reasons to exercise at all, and specifically to include strength training, is to slow and minimize these changes.

Can You Still Build Muscle As You Age?

The answer is absolutely yes. A study actually revealed that this can be done in as little as 40 minutes of strength training twice per week. The rate of muscle gain was the same for young adults, middle-aged adults, and older adults. Research shows that physical activity can help stave off sarcopenia, similar to the impact of exercise on osteoporosis. Muscle loss can lead to frailty, which can cause falls or fractures.

Frailty is often characterized by nutritional deficiencies, loss of balance and gait, and cognitive impairment. All of this means, that regular workouts play a huge role in maintaining overall good health, stability, and bone density into old age. And that muscle wasting is preventable.

We lose, on average, ten pounds of lean muscle mass for every decade of adult life. It is 100% possible to regain or to build muscle mass at age 50 or older. To build muscle mass, there should be a major focus on nutrition and diet. Ensuring that you’re consuming the proper amount of protein, which is critical to muscle development.

How can you build muscle mass as you age?

Can You Still Build Muscle As You Age?

As we age, our muscle mass decreases at surprising rates. According to Dr. David Heber, director of UCLA’s Center for Human Nutrition, an average male who weights 180 pounds might after age 60 lose as much as 10 pounds of muscle mass over a decade.

But can we turn that around?  Heber says absolutely.

In fact, new research published in the journal Medicine & Science In Sports & Exercise finds older adults who begin lifting weights after 50 may win the battle against age-related muscle loss.

“You have to do what we call resistance exercise,” Heber says. This can take a lot of different forms. “It could be lifting weights, it could be stretchy bands, but the key is you have to stretch a muscle.”

When you stretch a muscle to the point of straining it, as is the goal during weight lifting, you set in motion the body’s natural muscle-building response. The muscle has to adapt to the damage and build itself up to be prepared for the next weightlifting assault. In this way, muscles build fiber and actually increase in size.
